HAGURUKA

Long-standing Rwandan organisation dedicated to protecting and advancing the rights of women and children.

Organisation dedicated to protecting and advancing the rights of women and children. Established in 1991, it has played a central role in strengthening access to justice across the country, ensuring that women and girls are supported, heard, and able to live free from violence and discrimination.

With its head office in Kigali and regional teams working across all provinces, Haguruka is deeply embedded in the communities it serves. Its work combines legal expertise, psychosocial support, and evidence-based advocacy to create safer, more equitable environments for women and children.

At the heart of Haguruka’s mission is a commitment to dignity and fairness. The organisation supports survivors of gender-based violence, vulnerable families, and young mothers through accessible legal aid, community education, and guidance that helps restore stability and confidence. Haguruka also invests heavily in prevention—partnering with local leaders, youth, and families to shift harmful norms and strengthen peaceful, respectful relationships within households and communities.

Through their Access to Justice and GBV Prevention Programme, Haguruka provides:

  • Legal aid and mobile legal clinics, ensuring women and girls—particularly in rural or underserved areas—can access justice without financial or geographical barriers.
  • Psychosocial support, helping survivors navigate trauma with care and confidentiality.
  • Community dialogues and intergenerational sessions, fostering mutual understanding, reducing stigma, and strengthening family cohesion.
  • Research and advocacy, using data and evidence to influence policies and inform coordinated national efforts to prevent gender-based violence.
  • Capacity building for community paralegals and facilitators, creating sustainable, locally led mechanisms for protection and justice.

Haguruka’s work aligns closely with SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions). Their programmes advance equal rights, improve access to justice, promote community safety, and support national efforts to reduce gender-based violence.

The BB Energy Foundation is proud to partner with Haguruka in Rwanda. Together, we are supporting initiatives that empower women and girls to claim their rights, strengthen justice systems, and build a future where every individual can live free from violence.
